Brexit

Now that the UK has left the European Union, British motorists need to be mindful of the rules and regulations.

Will I still be able to use my UK license to drive in Spain?

At the time of writing British tourists can still use UK photocard licence and  International Drivers Licences are  not required.

British residents in Tenerife i.e. those that hold a Green Certificado de Registro de la Union or TIE card cannot use a UK licence and they are now ( since 31/12/2020) unable to exchange them as has been possible in the past.

Other clients from the European Union eg Germany, France etc are unaffected and can still exchange their licence.

British passport holders who are Spanish RESIDENTS cannot now exchange their UK license and so have to sit a Spanish driving test, theory and practical.

Will I still be able to use my UK registered car in Spain?

Yes, provided you are able to insure the vehicle for use in the EU (a green card would be required) you would be able to use the car on Spanish soil for a maximum of 30 days however this can be extended to 60 days if the registered keeper is still resident in the UK, however, this is a very grey area here in the Canaries. (Ley 38/1992, de 28 de diciembre articulo 65.1). Is it therefore best to seek official guidance in this instance.

This is going to depend on the insurance company. Some will accept international licenses to issue a policy and others will not.

I own a car in Spain, will my family still be able to drive it during their holidays?

This is going to depend on the insurance company. Each company have their own rules and some may accept a temporary driver with an international license. Our understanding is that most companies will allow a temporary driver with an international license, but you should check your policy carefully.
